What's actually at risk on a beat
A salmon or trout beat is a strange thing to protect. It's valuable, it's remote, and for most of the week there's nobody on it. That combination attracts a very particular list of problems.
The hut. Fishing huts are left stocked and left alone, and everybody who walks the bank knows it. Rods, reels, waders, outboards, tools, the odd generator. A hut at the far end of a track, out of sight of any road, is about the easiest break-in going. It's usually the single biggest loss on any beat, and it's the easiest one to put a camera on.
The pools. Poaching hasn't gone away. Nets across a tail, set lines, rods on the water at 5am from folk who were never on the booking sheet. On a trout fishery it's stock walking out the gate. Whatever form it takes, the pattern is the same: it happens when the beat is empty, and without a witness it keeps happening.
The parking. Anglers' cars sit in remote pull-ins all day, sometimes with a fair bit of kit in the boot. A camera covering the parking does two jobs at once: it looks after your rods' vehicles, and it tells you who's come and gone off the beat.
The bookings. Less dramatic, but every ghillie and syndicate secretary knows it: rods on the water who shouldn't be there. Not always malicious, sometimes just cheeky. Either way, you can't manage a beat you can't see.
The poaching problem
Let's do this one straight, because it matters and because it's where camera companies tend to overpromise.
Poaching salmon and trout is a criminal offence in Scotland, and the people who deal with it are the river's bailiffs and the police. A camera doesn't replace either of them. What a camera does is give them something to work with.
Think about what a poaching report usually amounts to: net marks found on a Tuesday, nobody seen, nothing to go on. Now think about the same report with footage attached: a time, a direction of travel, how many of them, what they carried, whether a vehicle was involved. That's the difference between a shrug and a case. Bailiffs can watch a stretch of water; they can't watch all of it, all night, all season. A camera can.
There's a quieter effect too. Word travels along a river faster than the water does. A beat that's known to be watched gets left alone, the same way a yard with a camera on the shed does. The poacher's whole model is that nobody sees. Take that away and most of them go elsewhere.
The straight answer
A camera won't leap off the post and stop a determined poacher at 3am, and we'll never tell you it will. What it does is see them, record them, alert your phone while it's happening, and hand the bailiffs evidence instead of guesswork. One more thing worth saying, since this is Scotland: walkers on the bank are usually exercising lawful access rights, and that's fine. The camera's job is the hut, the pools and the parking, not keeping tabs on folk out for a walk. Point it at what you're protecting.

Here's the part that turns a security purchase into something you use every day, and it's the reason river folk end up more attached to these cameras than farmers are.
Every angler on a spate river plays the same game. Rain overnight, and the question over breakfast: is it fishable? The river gauge tells you a number. It doesn't tell you the colour, and it doesn't show you your pool. So you drive, and half the time you drive home again.
With a camera on the beat, you open the app and look at the actual water. Height on the far bank, colour in the tail, whether it's dropping. Pan across the pool from your kitchen. Members of a syndicate can share the view and settle the "worth it?" question in the group chat before anyone's left the house.
Same story in reverse for the ghillie: a look at the beat before the day's rods arrive, a check that the hut's shut and the bank's clear, all before the first cup of tea. It's a small thing that gets used three hundred times a year, wrapped around a security camera that earns its keep the one night it matters.

Why riverbanks defeat normal cameras
There's a reason most beats have no camera on them, and it's not that nobody thought of it.
No power. The nearest socket to most fishing huts is a farmhouse away. Running mains down a bank was never happening, and generators are a job, not a solution.
No WiFi. Obviously. A riverbank is about the last place broadband reaches, which rules out every doorbell-style camera in the shops before you've opened the box.
The river itself. Banks flood. A spate river will happily rearrange anything mounted low, and damp gets into kit that isn't built for outdoors. Any camera on a beat needs to live above the high-water mark and shrug off weather all year.

Common mistake

Where to mount a camera on a beat
One camera, well placed, covers more of a beat than you'd think. Full pan and tilt means it's not staring at one slice of bank; it sweeps. Here's the order we'd cover things in.
1. The hut, covering its own approach. High on the gable, looking at the door and the track that leads to it. This is the highest-value position on the beat: it protects the biggest concentration of kit, and everything arriving at the hut walks through the frame.
2. The pool that matters. Every beat has one: the pool the poachers favour, or simply the one you'd check first every morning. A camera with a view across it does the security job at night and the water-check job every day. On many beats, one camera on the hut can pan to cover a pool as well.
3. The parking and the gate. If vehicles are involved in your problem, this is where they show up. A camera on the pull-in or the access gate logs every arrival, which is also quietly useful for knowing your booked rods got on and off the water fine.
4. Above the spate line, panel facing south. Wherever it goes: high enough that the biggest water you've ever seen on that river wouldn't touch it, and with the solar panel facing south and out of the tree canopy's shade. A riverbank under mature trees can be a dark place; sometimes the answer is mounting a few metres further back where the panel can see sky.

Can I put a security camera on a riverbank?
On land you own or manage, or with the owner's permission, yes. Point it at what you're protecting: the hut, the pools, the parking. Signage at the hut and access points is cheap, sensible, and does half the deterrent work on its own. Bear in mind folk on the bank in Scotland are often exercising lawful access rights, and the camera's there for the beat, not for them.

What it isn't is a physical barrier, and anyone who sells it as one is at it.
There's no power anywhere near the hut. Does that matter?
